Major League Fishing and Hurricane Hit Florida

by Major League Fishing Communications

LAKE PLACID, Fla. – Jack Link’s Major League Fishing is closing out its third production on Lake Istokpoga, a South Florida venue known regionally as one of Florida’s top big-bass factories. All week, competitors have been dealing with rain and high winds accompanying nearby Hurricane Sandy.

Anglers were greeted with 30-plus miles per hour wind gusts on Monday’s initial day of competition in the GEICO Challenge Cup. Despite the occasionally howling winds and rain, competition on the 28,000-acre lake has been fierce, according to Major League Fishing Commissioner Don Rucks.

“We have been watching weather patterns all week. If necessary, we can always suspend competition because of dangerous conditions. But we also know that these great anglers have been in these conditions plenty of times, and they can handle extremely strong wind. We’ve had no problems,” Rucks said.

Aside from the curveball thrown by Mother Nature, Rucks said the week has been “nothing short of fantastic.”

“It’s been a truly outstanding week of competition and production. Our anglers are tickled to death to be fishing on Lake Istokpoga, and the fact that it’s been a little windy has certainly not detracted from the quality of competition,” Rucks added. “This is a terrific venue, the lake is absolutely beautiful, the fishing has been dramatic, and I can’t think of a thing that could have made it better.”

Challenge Cup competition will wrap up on Saturday, October 27.

Jack Link’s Major League Fishing is a partnership between Outdoor Channel and 24 of the world’s best anglers. The league features made-for-television bass fishing events designed to bring high-level challenges to participants and entertainment, as well as insight, to audiences. The league’s first event was filmed at Lake Amistad near Del Rio, Texas, and shown earlier this year on Outdoor Channel.

The league’s second event, the Summit Cup, was filmed in late August on Chautauqua Lake in Western New York. It will be televised beginning on January 3, 2013, on Outdoor Channel, America’s Leader In Outdoor TV. The Summit Cup’s Championship Round will air February 9 on NBC.

Under the league’s innovative format, anglers are allowed to weigh all the score-able bass they catch. The bass are immediately weighed after they are caught, then released back into the water. In Major League Fishing competition, anglers know where they rank in the standings at all times via real-time leader boards in their boats. Anglers are not allowed to practice before events.
